About Us:
Teji and Abi, the founders of Drinking Gourd Ceremonies, are sisters. An Ọmọ-Odùduwà (Yorùbá) child naming ceremony was performed for each on the seventh day (the traditional day for a girl baby) after her birth. Although they were both born in the U.S., they were raised in a home with traditional Yorùbá customs and values. They often assisted their father when he conducted traditional ceremonies.
Teji and Abi started Drinking Gourd Ceremonies out of a recognition that, for African Americans and other members of the diaspora of western Africa, a traditional, or tradition-inspired, life ceremony (such as child-naming or wedding), can be a powerful way to reclaim, reconnect to, and celebrate our shared cultural legacy.
